Every student's path looks a little different, but here's the general order — from picking a university to your first day of class.

Research universities

Identify SEVP-certified institutions aligning with your program, budget, and post-graduation goals.

School issues I-20

Apply & get accepted

Submit your academic transcript and financial proof to receive Form I-20 from your designated school official (DSO).

Before DS-160

Pay SEVIS fee

Pay the required SEVIS I-901 fee online using your SEVIS ID printed on the top of your I-20.

After SEVIS fee

Fill out DS-160

Complete the online nonimmigrant visa application (DS-160) accurately with your photo and biographical data.

Up to 1 year ahead

Book your interview

Schedule your visa appointment at the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your home country as early as available.

2–4 weeks before

Prepare documents

Assemble financial ties, academic credentials, DS-160 confirmation, SEVIS receipt, and interview prep notes.

Attend interview
