Big changes to F-1 visas — here's what you need to know
In 2026, the U.S. government changed how long F-1 students can stay after being admitted. Instead of an open-ended stay tied to your enrollment, students are now admitted for a fixed period — up to 4 years — based on their program length.
- ✓Your admission now has a clear end date, not an open-ended one
- ✓Applies to new students and students already in the U.S.
- ✓Longer programs (some Master's and PhD) may need an Extension of Stay with USCIS before the period ends
- ✓Graduate students generally can't switch programs or transfer schools once enrolled, except in rare approved cases
- ✓F-2 dependents get a matching fixed period and must extend separately if needed
- ✓Only SEVP-certified schools can issue a valid I-20 — always double-check a school's status
- ✓Rules can still be updated by the government — we keep this page current as official guidance develops.
Fixed Period Admission
Duration of Status (D/S) - Open-ended stay as long as enrolled.
Fixed Period Admission (Up to 4 years max initially).
What you must do:
Verify your program end date, monitor your USCIS I-94 record, and apply for formal Extension of Stay if your degree takes longer than your initial period.
